At 11am arrival in the city of Guba
It is curious that the famous Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl believed that the "Aces" mentioned in the German-Scandinavian epic "Edda" are the most ancient ancestors of the Azerbaijanis! During his visit to Azerbaijan, he visited Guba and realized that they came to the north of Europe during the great migration of peoples. That Scandinavian epic tells us that the Aces led by Odin live in the heavenly village of Asgard. Perhaps that same "heavenly village" is the high-mountain village of Khinalag, isn't it?
Have you ever been to Mars? If not, don't worry, you will be soon! there is a very unusual Martian landscape in Khizi region - amazing Candy mountains.
Sometimes also called agate mountains, they are covered with a layer of clay with stones. For hundreds of years all the 4 elements worked on this unique landscape. There are similar mountains in the American Death Valley, but it is very far away, and ours are much closer!
Here you can wander along the multi-colored slopes, climb to the top and take great pictures against the Martian background.
Have you ever heard about Caucasian Jerusalem? The one that is in Azerbaijan.. We assume you have not, yet.
So, today you will visit the Jewish settlement in Quba region, also called - The Red Village. it has been known worldwide as the only settlement outside of Israel, where Jews have lived for hundreds of years next to the Azerbaijanis in peace and prosperity, making up the majority.
Together we will walk along the streets of this village and visit the only museum of Mountain Jews in the world. We will talk to the museum curator, learn about their unique language similar to Farsi, and visit one of three synagogues..
But, please note, due to increased security measures, the entrance to the the Six-Dome synagogue is closed.
Once upon a time a mass grave was discovered on the football pitch during some renovation works in 2007. You need to show some ID to visit it. But then the English speaking guide will give some historical information and answer any question about the genocide committed by Armenians in 1918. As usual in Azerbaijan, art is combined with architecture to help us learn more about history. Very instructive, although a little sad story.
